I am an attorney by day, but that's really just my "backup gig" in case this whole "musician thing" doesn't work out. ;^) I was been blessed with the opportunity to write freelance reviews for Guitar World's Bass Guitar Magazine, and I contributed regularly from the Spring of 2006 up until Bass Guitar Magazine's demise. This was, in itself, a dream come true, and an opportunity for which I am truly grateful. But this was a stepping stone to bigger and better things, and I am now the Editor-in-Chief of Bass Gear Magazine (www.bassgearmag.com). Our first issue came out in August of 2008, and we are now the leading bass review magazine, worldwide. Of course, on the topic of my true blessings, I have a wife and two kids, all of whom I greatly adore, so my time for music/bass/songwriting/performing, and yes, even the occasional practicing, is not infinite. Nevertheless, I really enjoy my time spent playing bass, writing and recording songs, and just getting to "play" with all that great gear! This blog is a result of these external interests...

Tom,
I am looking to get rid on a SWR Baby Blue Monitor (the original with Bag End drivers). I'm thinking of replacing it with a Bergantino HT210 (4 ohm), EA NL-210 (4 ohm), Accugroove Whappo Jr., or an Accugroove Tri112L. I'm looking for one cabinet (or a pair in the case of the Tri112L) that covers 90% of any sound or volume needed. I like a clear, defined tone that isn't sterile and is well balanced from a low-B all the way up. Any thoughts? Do you have any of these for sale and/or would you be interested in the SWR? Thanks.

Very informative blog . . . its great to read the comparisons. I wish I could do that myself. Lucky man you are. As for your downsizing I was wondering if you would be willing to part with any of your Bergantino cabinets. If so just let me know which one/ones. Thanks.

Clint:

Well, I have never seen a 4 ohm HT210, so I am not sure if they exist (though Jim did offer a 4 ohm HT210s). But either the 4 ohm NL-210 or Whappo, Jr. would probably fit your bill. Maybe a Glockenklang Doube (2x12) as well. It somewhat depends on how much volume you need and what you are pushing the cab with.

And your SWR Baby Blue, is that the cab only, or the combo?

Matthew:

Thank you for your kind words!

No plans on selling any Bergantino cabs at this point in time.

Sorry, Tom.

Thanks Tom. I was in contact with Jim at Bergantino this week, and apparently he is going to be introducing a new 210 cab that works better with lower powered amps on the market. I might wait to see how they sound.
My SWR is the cab only. I guess they are pretty rare. I've only ever seen a cuople of the original ones for sale.

If you want to sell the Baby Blue cab, drop me an e-mail (see my profile).

Tom, I have a Bag End 4x10 (q10bx) cabinet and a crest ca-9 poweramp. Eventually will add a 18" Bad End sub with infra red processor. Need a preamp, which would you suggest as the best match..Millennia TD-1, Demeter HMP-1, Demeter VTBP-201, or Alembic FX-1 or something totally different. I play jazz and gospel?

Very informative blog. I noticed that you are going to possibly sell the Trace Elliot GP12XV preamp. Shoot me an e-mail if you decide to. Also any plans on comparing preamp performance?

9:45 PM
Blogger Tom Bowlus said...

I am strongly considering selling the GP XV12. I have done a fair amount of preamp testing, though I am still working on my 'ultimate preamp shootout' - man, that is a LOT of preamps!!!

If you are interested in the XV, shoot me an offer. ;^)

If you still have your Hughes & Kettner Fortress for sale, How much and if you don't how much did it go for. I am trying to figure what to pay for such a thing. There is one on EBay but sounds a little flakey.

I have an old Garnet PA 6 channel G100PAR 2&3 tube head and cabinet. Anyone interested? Randy Bachman was and is a big Garnet kinda guy. Both Garnet and Bachman were manufactured out in Western Canada.

The Epifani 212 still around? Is it in good condition? What sort of price?

I just came about this blog on a random basis, great thing you have going here!

Also: any interest in a Trace Elliot AH-500x MK V? I Saw you used some Trace, thought I'd ask. Works great, though is aged (1989) and the Graphic EQ/Mid Cut switches are problematic, but work great with the footswitch. This was their top of the line back in the day.

Hi Tom,
I, like many others, have enjoyed reading your blog a lot.

Have you ever run across an Aguilar DB900? What were your impressions? Though they're quite hard to find I'm considering that it would have a nice sound in the effects loop of an AI Focus, for use with UB and DB, then using the XLR out to house. How would that strike you?
Do you know of any for sale?

12:08 PM
Blogger Tom Bowlus said...

Miles:

I had a DB900 for a while, and it is a very nice tube DI. I found it to be pretty neutral. I only sold it because my Demeter tube DI had very similar functionality.

Tom, do you still have the Accugroove Tri-208 AND one of the Markbass NY-604 bass cabs for sale?, thanks, Ray.

4:29 PM
Blogger Tom Bowlus said...

Yes, I do still have the Tri-208, and I do have two NY604's, but I would prefer to sell the two of them as a pair.

9:56 PM
Blogger Tom Bowlus said...

LowSpyder, I found that the Ampeg SVT-210AV paired up really nicely with the Lil Bastard, and I am sure that the PortaFlex series cabs would also pair nicely. Any of the current Acme 10" equipped cabs (One10, Two10, Four10, etc) would also pair nicely. Older Trace Elliot and Mesa/Boogie cabs would also be good bets. But I really liked the VS112. What don't you like about it?
